Empowering the Next Generation to Build Their Futures in Construction
Westmeath, February 10th, 2025: In an exciting collaboration, Westmeath-based leading construction companies Bennett Construction and Shay Murtagh have joined forces with the Construction Industry Federation (CIF) to launch the pilot programme of Constructing Careers: School Edition.
This initiative aims to inspire secondary school students to consider rewarding careers in the construction sector, offering a comprehensive insight into the diverse roles and opportunities available.
The launch week coincides with Valentine’s Day, and the campaign embraces the theme of passion and love for construction, highlighting the exciting and rewarding careers available in the industry. The pilot programme features speakers from various disciplines within the construction industry, including civil engineering, quantity surveying, health and safety, and project management. These industry professionals will showcase the depth and breadth of opportunities within a sector that is rapidly evolving.
As part of the programme, students will actively engage in hands-on tasks and research, exploring the tools, technologies, and skills used in construction. Additionally, the students will attend a presentation from the companies on career paths, industry demands, and the exciting prospects available to those who choose to pursue a future in this vital field.
Gillian Murtagh, Shared Services Director of Shay Murtagh spoke about the programme’s significance, saying:
“We want to break the stereotypes of construction being just ‘hard hats and bricks’ and show students the incredible innovation, creativity, and variety that a career in construction offers. By engaging with schools early, we hope to inspire young people to see construction as an exciting and dynamic choice.”
Helena Kiernan, HR Director from Bennett Construction echoed these sentiments, adding:
“This pilot programme is laying the foundation for the future of our industry. Construction is crucial in shaping our world, and we need to ensure that the next generation recognises the incredible opportunities awaiting them in this field. We’re proud to work alongside CIF to bring this vision to life.”
John O’Shaughnessy, Chair of the CIF’S Education, Training & Skills Sub-committee added:
“The construction sector is essential to Ireland’s growth and development. Through ‘Constructing Careers’, we aim to engage students, highlight the industry’s importance, and demonstrate how they can play a role in building a sustainable future. This pilot is just the beginning—we’re calling on schools nationwide to join us in expanding this initiative.”
The Constructing Careers pilot programme has been designed with scalability and the potential to roll out nationwide. By participating in the programme, schools and construction companies can play a part in preparing students for vibrant and fulfilling careers in construction.
Schools and local construction companies are encouraged to express their interest in participating in the programme by contacting the Construction Industry Federation via Sean Downey [email protected]
